I think I was shocked

So, when I first started reading, I was sort of shocked with all the responsibility Irena was taking on as a high schooler. I don't know about you but when I was in high school I only had to worry about sports, school work, and my friends. When I realized Irena was the same age, playing sports like I did, yet becoming a sniper I couldn't quite take it in. When I think of snipers I think about movies and how they are always old guys dressed in black...never do I think of a 17 year old who plays basketball and is into Madonna! What did everyone else think about this? Was it hard for anyone else to believe that even during war a seventeen year old was doing such dirty work!?

Yes it was a tad bit hard for me to take in the fact that this young girl was a sniper at suh a young age. Im in highschool now and I dont have any problems as serious as that. But Irena is dealiung with her sniper situation well shes not killing children or the elderly.

i was pretty shocked as well! seeing such a young girl going through some many different obstacles, shes a student, sniper, daughter, friend, athlete, lover and yet still remains to seem like just another girl. Its all alittle confusing but as i read on i get whats going, it all comes together. At first I was starting to think.." wait this is boring" but as I read on I get more and more interested in what is going on. Between all the drama and emotion im really starting to like this book.

Irena is a very strong person I couldnt handle all of the things she went through, seeing peolpe killed being raped and finding her grandmother dead. All of these events are overwhelming and i believe most teenagers would have broken down, not Irena she becomess a sniper

When i first starting reading this book I found it a little confusing and I never realy took in the fact that she was only seventeen being a sniper. The fact that she was going through alot of emotional changes is what made me look at her like she was just a normal teenager untill I began to read on.

Yes. I agree I shaocked to see such a young girl being a sniper. I am 17 and I couldn't see myself being a sniper. But she does what she has to. Irena is going through a lot and handles it very well. It shows she is a strong girl and can handle anything. I like that about her.

Yes I agree, it was hard for me to understand why a girl at a such age like Irena is a sniper. I think that snipers are usually older people that have a grudge against someone that just wants to kill them. I am in high school now and I do not deal with problems as serious as Irena does.

Hi rich, krystal, christina, becca, ladyray, hope07, and zuly:

I was just wondering what you guys thought of the YouTube video and, now that you've gotten into the book a bit, about how the song "Miss Sarajevo" relates to what Irena is going through. I LOVE U2, but I never really listened to this song until I read this book. I think I really understand more about what they're saying... any thoughts?

Thanks!

It was also very hard for me to understand what was going on in the begining of the story because of the flashback. Throughout the first 7 chapters of the book when she was raped and her neighbor was killed i was thinking why isnt she shooting or at least fighting the aggressors if she was a sniper.
After I found out that it was a flashback it was very easy for me to see why she would become a sniper and fight. Overall the book is very good so far.

Yes. I can't even imagine the tragedy that this girl has to go through.Just thinking of me being my age right now having to fight for my life and my family not even be able to help me. It would seem that i have no control over what people do to me and force me to do. I wouldn't think that Irean would be a kind of girl that would become a sniper in the future because she is an athletic person not a hardcore killer or something. But if you look at what she is going through in this book i wouldn't blame her to get revenge in any way shape or form .

I think Irena is a very strong girl, because she is only seventeen years old, and is taking on a very big responsibility with the war going on. It's hard to imagine someone my age becoming a sniper, I don't know what I would do if I was in that situation, it is very shocking to see her deal with being raped and everything else and still be strong and fight.

One thing I don't like about this book is that the Zarics don't seem to take thing serious or are as serious as they should be. Like I remember in the book when they buried Mr. Zaric 's mother they started to sing a song. That shock me because there in the middle of a war or a conflict and they can get shot by a sniper at any minute and they singing songs like its a normal fuernal. They don't act like a typical family would in a conflit like there in.

the book shocked me about how this young girl had to grow threw so much and she's only in highschool. I myself could never imagine being a sniper in a war or seeing people being killed on a daily basis. she is a very strong person to do what she does and go thru what she does.

I'm going to have to add my four cents. Very interesting question being posed. Simon really toys with your perception about what a sniper most likely would be. When I think of a sniper I think of Stallone/Banderas in Assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald (allegedly), or some paramilitary former Navy Seal nutjob. Not a 17 year old girl.

Now, I'm only 150 pages in, so, if anything I say turns out to not come to fruition, so be it. At the point of the novel I'm at Irena hasn't killed anyone, other than phoning and faking the need for air support to destroy that house.

(I just had a twenty minute interupption and forgot my train of thought.

But like, I think the extreme tendencies exhibited in the beginning of the novel make this transition believable. She has the incident with Coach Dino (ok...pattern of incidents), she's an extremely competitive athlete, and she is raped. I think that these things make this path possible.

I'll have to see, though. As I said, I'm only 150 pages or so into the book, but I'm willing to bet that Irena struggles mightily with the killing. I also predict that there is some sort of face off with that radio personality at the end. Maybe I played too many video games in high school, but I kind of think he'll be a stage boss.

One last thought...what is even more unimaginable is that Simon created Irena's character out of a real person whom he interviewed. Interesante.

Also dudes...make sure you don't fake it. Your thoughts should reflect a careful reading of the novel. If you're behind on the reading, don't fake that you have, because you'll sound like a nitwit (that's a clinical definition).

Oh yeah, and watch the spelling. We're not heating the outside.
